The folder contained documents from a social services investigation. Daniel explained that his birth mother had died when he was very young, and his father had disappeared. Emily had discovered that Daniel was related to Margaret through her late husband. He was Margaret’s grandson. Margaret stared at the documents, struggling to understand why nobody had told her. Daniel explained that Emily had wanted to reunite them, but circumstances had prevented it. He had been afraid to approach Margaret because he thought she might blame him for everything that had happened.
Margaret slowly reached for his hand. “You don’t have to explain anything, sweetheart,” she whispered. “If Emily loved you, then I already have a reason to love you.” Daniel finally broke down and hugged her. But the most beautiful surprise came when he admitted that he hadn’t disappeared because he wanted to leave. He had been working extra hours to save enough money for something special: a memorial garden for Emily.
