The letter explained that Emily had secretly become Daniel’s guardian after discovering he was living with an abusive relative. She had helped him find a safe home and promised never to abandon him. But before she could tell her mother about him, the accident happened. Emily had feared Margaret would reject the boy because of their difficult family history. Daniel explained that he had continued visiting Margaret because Emily had once told him that her mother loved vanilla lattes. Buying her coffee was his way of keeping Emily’s memory alive. Margaret covered her mouth, realizing how much love her daughter had carried in silence.
Then Daniel revealed the final sentence of Emily’s letter. “Mom, if you’re reading this, please give Daniel the family he deserves.” Margaret looked at him through her tears. But Daniel wasn’t finished. He reached into his backpack and pulled out a small medical folder. “There’s another reason I disappeared,” he said. “I found something about my birth mother, and I think you deserve to know.”
