The following morning, Margaret and Daniel returned to the Mug & Muffin. For the first time, they arrived together. I prepared two vanilla lattes and a hot chocolate, placing them on the counter without asking for payment. Margaret smiled and told me that Daniel would be living with her. They had already begun making plans for the memorial garden. Daniel wanted to plant white roses because Emily had loved them. As I watched them leave, I realized that the empty parking space had not marked the end of a story. It had marked the beginning of another family.
A week later, Margaret invited me to the garden dedication. A beautiful wooden bench stood beneath a young maple tree, with Emily’s name engraved across its back. Daniel placed a small photograph beside the flowers. It showed Emily smiling, holding a little boy in her arms. Margaret turned to me and said, “She brought us together, even after she was gone.” Then Daniel approached with one final surprise: a letter he had written himself.
