I immediately called Chloe, but she didn’t answer. Ten minutes passed before my phone finally rang. Her voice sounded unusually quiet. She told me Richard hadn’t gone to a restaurant, a friend’s house, or anywhere suspicious. Instead, he had driven to a small cemetery on the outskirts of town. She had watched him park beside an old stone bench and walk toward a particular grave.
I asked whose grave it was, but Chloe didn’t know yet. She explained that Richard had placed a bouquet of white roses beside the headstone before sitting down. Then he began speaking softly, as though someone were sitting beside him. Chloe moved closer, hoping to hear what he was saying.
