The photograph showed my winning scratch card. I had purchased it on my seventieth birthday, using the five dollars Trevor and Amanda had given me. The prize was eight million dollars. I hadn’t told anyone, not even my closest friends. Instead, I hired Nathan Brooks, an attorney specializing in property and estate matters. Together, we established a holding company and purchased the outstanding debt attached to their house. Trevor stared at the photograph. “You won eight million?” he finally managed. I nodded. Amanda immediately reached for my hand.
But I pulled away. “There’s something else,” I explained. “For three years, you’ve been living in a house that I secretly own.” Nathan’s thirty-day notice gave them time to discuss their future arrangements.
