Trevor began protesting. “Mom, we were joking! You know how families tease each other.” I remembered that birthday perfectly. Amanda had handed me the five-dollar card while Trevor laughed that I was becoming an expensive responsibility. Later, they asked me to pay their electricity bill because they were struggling. I had done it, as usual. What they didn’t understand was that their disrespect had been accumulating for years. I showed them a folder containing bank transfers, unpaid loans, and household expenses I had covered. Amanda stopped crying when she saw the total.
“Almost $94,000,” I explained. “And not once did either of you ask whether I could afford it.”
