Three years earlier, I’d established a family account to pay for celebrations and emergencies. I contributed regularly, while Mom and Dad occasionally added money. Ross had permission to use its debit card for legitimate family expenses. However, the records showed he’d contributed only $600 during the previous year. Meanwhile, $3,740 had disappeared through questionable purchases, including expensive tires, an anniversary gift, and his extravagant New Year’s celebration. My children’s exclusion made the discovery even more painful.
I immediately blocked Ross’s card and removed his authorization. At 7:30, I informed Mom about the missing money and what happened to Calvin and Molly. Four minutes later, she promised to call him. Shortly afterward, Ross appeared at my door, furious. He demanded access to the account and insisted the money belonged to him. I calmly explained the transactions. His face changed when I mentioned the $3,740. Then he pointed at me and threatened to take me to court.
