Daniel’s wife decided she had entertained this ridiculous conversation long enough. She asked him to describe his surroundings. He mentioned a small bridge, a rusty mailbox, and a sign pointing toward an unfamiliar village. She recognized the village name immediately. It was nearly forty miles from their home. Daniel groaned when she explained how far he had traveled. Then she noticed something interesting. Whiskers had suddenly jumped from the sofa and was scratching excitedly at the front door. The cat seemed unusually restless, almost as though he understood exactly what was happening.
“Daniel,” she said, “I think Whiskers has another idea.” But before she could explain, the phone disconnected.
