Forrest Mars was the son of Frank Mars, founder of the company behind the famous Mars chocolate business. Although he understood the candy industry, Forrest wanted to develop something different. During his travels in Europe in the late 1930s, he reportedly encountered soldiers eating chocolate covered with a hard sugar coating. The protective shell helped prevent the chocolate from melting in warm conditions, making it convenient to carry.
The idea immediately caught his attention. At a time when chocolate frequently became messy in hot weather, a candy that could withstand higher temperatures had enormous potential. Forrest returned to America determined to develop his own version. But he needed a reliable supply of chocolate and a business partner who could help make the idea possible.
