I quickly stepped back as the crackling grew louder. A thin ribbon of smoke escaped through the toaster slots, carrying the unmistakable smell of burning plastic. My heart pounded while I rushed to switch off the kitchen circuit breaker instead of grabbing the appliance directly. The glow disappeared almost instantly, leaving the room silent except for my own breathing. The few seconds spent unplugging an appliance could prevent thousands of dollars in damage—or save lives.
