David arrived the next afternoon with a financial adviser and several documents. He explained that he had been transferring $5,000 every month to an account Clara controlled. He had trusted her to distribute the money because she claimed she wanted to take responsibility for helping his mother. The adviser compared the payment records with my bank statements. The money had never reached me. Instead, the transfers had gone into an account associated with Clara. David looked devastated. He had spent eight months believing I was living comfortably while I was struggling to buy basic necessities.
That evening, David confronted Clara at their house. She initially denied everything, claiming the money had been used for household expenses. But when David requested detailed records, she couldn’t explain several large withdrawals. He eventually discovered payments for designer handbags, expensive jewelry, luxury hotel stays, and purchases made through a private credit account. Worse, some transactions had been disguised as charitable expenses. David called me late that night. His voice was shaking. “Mom, I think there’s much more to this than the money.” Then he told me he had found an account I didn’t recognize.
