The unfamiliar account contained more than the missing allowance. David discovered that Clara had been moving money between several accounts and making purchases under misleading descriptions. Some transfers had been presented to him as payments for my medical care. Others were labeled as home repairs and emergency expenses. Yet I had received neither the medical assistance nor the money for repairs. When David examined the records more closely, he found that Clara had also been telling friends and relatives that she was financially supporting his widowed mother. She had built an entire reputation around generosity that never existed.
David contacted an attorney and arranged a formal financial review. Clara was asked to provide documentation for every transfer. Her explanations changed repeatedly, and several receipts appeared inconsistent with the banking records. I felt sick imagining how easily I could have been blamed for spending money I had never received. But David refused to let that happen. He apologized for trusting someone else with my financial security without checking the facts. I took his hand and told him I didn’t want revenge. I simply wanted the truth. Then the attorney called with an update that neither of us expected.
