Clara immediately recovered her smile and asked what was happening. David showed her the empty pantry bag and asked why I had been collecting food from church if she had supposedly sent me thousands of dollars. She laughed nervously and explained that perhaps the bank had experienced delays. She insisted she had handled everything correctly. But David wasn’t convinced. He asked her to show him the actual transaction receipts rather than screenshots. Clara suddenly became defensive. She claimed he was embarrassing her by questioning her generosity in front of his own mother.
After they left, I couldn’t stop thinking about the conversation. I had never wanted money to become a source of conflict between my son and his wife. Still, something felt terribly wrong. The following morning, I visited First Texas Community Bank and requested my account history. The teller patiently reviewed every transaction. There were no deposits from Clara, no transfers from David, and no missing payments waiting to clear. I asked for printed statements covering the previous eight months. When I returned home, I placed them on my kitchen table and called David. We needed to discover where his money had gone.
