Dinner was almost finished when Daniel finally asked how I could afford such a beautiful property. I placed my fork down and looked directly at him. “Daniel, there’s something I’ve never told you. Eighteen months ago, I won the Powerball lottery.” His smile disappeared. Renee stopped chewing. I explained the $89 million prize, the taxes, and the Second Cup trust protecting my remaining fortune.
Daniel stared at me as though I had suddenly become a stranger. “Mom, you’re telling me you’re a millionaire?” he whispered. I nodded. Then I told him something he wasn’t expecting: “I didn’t keep it secret because I wanted to trick you. I wanted to know whether you would still love me when you thought I had nothing.”
