The following Saturday, Daniel sat beside me at breakfast and cleared his throat. He explained that the family needed more privacy and suggested I start looking for an apartment. Renee added that thirty days should be enough time. I looked at both of them, surprised by how casually they discussed sending me away after everything I had done.
I didn’t argue. I simply smiled and said, “Of course. I’ll make arrangements.” Daniel seemed relieved. He had no idea that I already owned enough money to purchase their entire neighborhood. Instead, I began packing my fourteen boxes, carefully protecting Harold’s mesquite porch sign.
