The officer opened the door and escorted Linda toward the community center. As soon as they entered, every light in the gym suddenly switched on. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” someone shouted. Purple and gold balloons covered the room, decorations hung from the basketball hoops, and a beautiful cake stood on a decorated table. Five of Linda’s children stood together, waiting for her reaction. But instead of smiling, Linda stared at them with tears in her eyes. “So you were all here,” she whispered. Mark immediately stepped forward, realizing that their surprise had caused their mother far more pain than anyone had imagined.
They explained that they had organized a special birthday celebration and expected Grant to collect her at five. Everyone had agreed not to answer their phones because they didn’t want to spoil the surprise. Grant had repeatedly messaged them, claiming he was running late. But when Linda asked where he was, the room suddenly became silent. Eliza admitted they thought he was already with her. Sarah turned toward the officer, demanding to know why a policeman had brought their mother there. Before anyone could answer, headlights appeared outside. Another police cruiser was approaching the building.
