Margaret heard something touch the bedroom doorknob. She covered her mouth to keep herself from screaming. The dispatcher remained on the line, reassuring her that officers were approaching. Suddenly, a woman’s voice came from the other side of the door. “Margaret, please don’t be afraid. I need you to listen.” Margaret recognized something familiar about the voice, although she couldn’t immediately identify it. The woman continued, “Your husband left something for you. You need to know what happened before it’s too late.”
Margaret almost dropped her phone. Her husband, Robert, had been dead for two years. She told the dispatcher what she had heard, and his tone immediately changed. He asked her not to respond to the woman. Then the voice outside the bedroom whispered, “He promised you would never find out.” Margaret began sobbing. What secret could her late husband possibly have left behind? Before she could ask another question, headlights swept across her bedroom curtains. The police had finally arrived.
