Later that afternoon, I contacted the babysitter and asked whether we could speak. When she arrived, I apologized for making her feel uncomfortable and for questioning her intentions. She explained that she had been shocked by the situation herself and hadn’t expected such an awkward misunderstanding. She accepted my apology and assured me that she had only wanted to help our children. I thanked her for continuing to care for them despite the uncomfortable circumstances.
My husband also apologized for putting her in that position.
After she left, my husband and I sat together and discussed what would happen next. We reviewed our finances, talked about his job search, and agreed that neither of us should carry difficult problems alone. I admitted that I had allowed suspicion to replace communication. He acknowledged that shame had made him dishonest. Neither of us was completely innocent in how we had handled the situation, but we both wanted to repair the damage. For the first time in days, I felt that we were finally talking as partners again.
