Becky could hardly believe what had happened. Her husband, Jake, was furious and suggested returning every penny to Dale’s workshop. But Becky refused. She didn’t want her children remembering their mother responding to cruelty with more cruelty. Instead, she brought out a large plastic tub, filled it with warm water and dish soap, and began cleaning the coins. Noah immediately volunteered to help, followed by little Lily, who arrived wearing her pink rain boots and carrying two old toothbrushes.
For several days, they washed, dried, counted, and wrapped thousands of pennies. Their hands became sore, their clothes grew dirty, and the work seemed endless. Yet something unexpected happened during those exhausting hours. Noah mentioned a classmate named Mason who repeatedly received only a cheese sandwich at school because his family couldn’t afford his lunch account. Becky suddenly realized those unwanted pennies could become something much more valuable.
