Harold eventually moved into the cabin he’d been discussing with Tiffany. He imagined it would become their peaceful retreat, especially after receiving the money he expected from my pension arrangements. Unfortunately for him, Tiffany found the cabin considerably less attractive when she discovered there would be no lump-sum payment. She stopped visiting as often, and Harold was left dealing with the isolation he’d never imagined. Dennis eventually told me what happened. He had watched the confrontation at the restaurant and admitted he was sorry for remaining silent while Harold treated me so poorly.
I thanked Dennis because his apology was sincere. Meanwhile, I began making small changes around my house. I rearranged the kitchen, replaced the curtains, and finally removed the old furniture Harold had insisted on keeping. The rooms began feeling like mine again. I discovered that I enjoyed peaceful mornings without someone criticizing how I prepared breakfast. I even started taking longer walks. Still, I wondered whether Harold would ever understand what he’d lost. Then, one spring afternoon, my telephone rang, and his familiar voice came through.
