Before examining the famous patent, it helps to understand how toilet paper became a household necessity. In 1857, Joseph Gayetty introduced commercially produced medicated toilet paper in America. Unlike today’s familiar rolls, his product came in individual flat sheets. It was an unusual invention at the time, but it helped establish a market for a product that would eventually become essential in homes around the world.
Years later, manufacturers began developing perforated paper rolls that made individual sheets easier to separate. One inventor who contributed to these improvements was Seth Wheeler of Albany, New York. His work helped transform toilet paper into the convenient product people recognize today.
