I arrived at the hospital the following morning. Emily was sitting beside a woman wearing a medical identification badge. She introduced herself as the hospital’s patient records director. She explained that Emily had requested a second DNA investigation, this time comparing the baby’s DNA with both parents. The results were shocking. Neither Emily nor I was biologically related to the little boy. Emily covered her mouth and began sobbing. I stared at the director, unable to understand how such a thing could happen.
She explained that an investigation had uncovered inconsistencies in the hospital’s newborn records. Two baby boys had been delivered within minutes of each other that night. Their identification bracelets had been checked again, and something didn’t match. Then she showed us a photograph of another newborn. Emily immediately recognized the blanket. It was the same one our son had been wrapped in.
