The attorney invited me to his office, where he showed me Margaret’s notebook. Every loan was carefully recorded, along with a small note describing what she needed it for. Beside one entry, she had written, “He helped me when I couldn’t ask my own family.” I felt ashamed of how many times I had complained about her. I had assumed she was careless with money, never considering the possibility that she was fighting a battle I couldn’t see.
The attorney then handed me a sealed envelope containing a bank statement and a cashier’s check. Margaret had arranged for the full amount to be returned. But the attorney explained that repayment wasn’t the only reason she had contacted me. She had also requested that I visit a particular address. It belonged to a small community center she had supported. She wanted me to see what she had been working on before she died.
