Margaret’s letter revealed that her husband had died years earlier, leaving her with enormous debts. Shortly afterward, she was diagnosed with a serious illness. Her savings disappeared into medical expenses, and she eventually struggled to afford even basic groceries. She had been too ashamed to tell anyone the truth. Every time she knocked on my door, she intended to explain everything, but fear kept her silent. I suddenly remembered her trembling hands and the tears she sometimes wiped away before leaving.
Then I reached the paragraph that made me cry. Margaret explained that she had sold her house for less than its market value because she needed money for treatment and wanted to settle her remaining debts. She hadn’t disappeared to escape responsibility. She had moved into a care facility near her daughter. But there was something else she wanted me to understand. The money I had lent her had saved her from going hungry during her darkest months.
