The following Saturday, I visited the community center. An elderly woman welcomed me and immediately recognized my name. She explained that Margaret had spent her final months helping establish a small emergency assistance program for struggling neighbors. She wanted people who were ashamed to ask for help to have somewhere safe to turn. I walked through the building, noticing shelves of groceries, donated clothing, and a small room where families could receive assistance privately.
Then the woman showed me a photograph of Margaret standing beside a handwritten sign. Underneath it were the words, “Kindness should never make anyone feel small.” I couldn’t hold back my tears. Margaret had used her remaining strength to create something meaningful for people who were struggling just as she once had. The woman then handed me another envelope. Margaret had left one final request specifically for me.
