My future mother-in-law never liked the idea of her son raising another man’s child. I knew Barbara thought my seven-year-old daughter, Lisa, was “baggage,” but I never imagined she would humiliate her at my wedding. Brandon had never treated Lisa like a burden. He taught her to ride a bicycle, remembered her favorite cereal, and when he proposed, Lisa asked, “Does that mean I get a dad too?” He knelt and answered, “If you’ll have me.” I thought that settled everything.
On our wedding morning, Barbara volunteered to arrange my dress train. I trusted her. During the ceremony, however, guests began whispering. Lisa pointed behind me. “Mom, why does that suitcase have my name on it?” Tiny fabric suitcases had been sewn across my wedding gown, and the largest one was labeled LISA. Barbara smiled. “I simply made your dress honest. Everyone can see the baggage you’re bringing into his marriage.” Lisa’s face crumpled. “Am I baggage?” I grabbed her hand. Brandon stared at his mother, then quietly said, “Give me five minutes.” He walked out.
