I drove Dad to his farm on a cool October morning. Despite his limited mobility, he recognized every field, pasture, and fence post. When Bobby Whitt approached, they exchanged friendly greetings. Then Dad asked, “Bobby, where have you been sending my rent checks?” Bobby looked confused. “To Sherry, Clayton. She’s been receiving them since you entered the nursing home.” He explained that Sherry had shown him her power-of-attorney documents and instructed him to send every payment directly to her. Dad listened quietly before revealing that I’d been paying his nursing home bills.
Bobby was horrified. He immediately offered copies of every payment record. Dad assured him he wasn’t responsible and instructed him to contact him directly about future payments. On our drive back, Dad remained silent. Finally, he turned toward me and said, “Call your sister. Tell her I want both my daughters here tomorrow morning at ten.” His voice was calm, but I knew this conversation would change our family forever.
