The new arrangement restored his independence. Meanwhile, Doug and I finally replaced our leaking roof for $11,000. When the next heavy rain arrived, we listened peacefully instead of placing buckets beneath the ceiling. Doug smiled and suggested something we’d postponed for years: a vacation in the Smoky Mountains. I finally agreed.
Still, I wondered whether Sherry and I could ever become close again. The answer began arriving on Christmas Eve when someone knocked on our door. It was my older sister, holding a dish of homemade sausage balls. She looked nervous and asked whether I would allow her inside. I looked at the woman who had once protected me as a child, then stepped forward and opened my arms.
