What Harlan Had Written In The Trust Document Itself, And The Slow Difficult Years That Came After I Went Home

The trust had a second page I did not read until the following week, alone, in the kitchen he built. It was not a punishment clause. It was a reinstatement clause. Any child who came to me directly, with no lawyer and no laptop, and asked nothing, could be restored at my sole discretion. Harlan had not disinherited them. He had handed me the only thing I had never been given in that family, which was the right to decide.

 

 

He had signed it twelve years earlier. That is what took me longest to sit with. My husband had watched our children treat me a certain way since at least 2014 and had said nothing to me, only to a banker on Main Street, because he knew I would have talked him out of it.
