She arrived at 8:20 with Marissa in the passenger seat and a shoebox on her lap. Graham met her on the walk and did not let her past the step, which I had not asked him to do and will be grateful for as long as I live.
The shoebox held my grandmother’s papers. Charlene had been holding them since 2009. Inside was the original transfer letter showing that the investment account had been left directly to me, not to my mother, and a handwritten note from my grandmother explaining why: she had watched Charlene spend a decade calling her youngest daughter greedy and had decided to route around it. My mother had carried that box to my house believing it was evidence of theft. She had never once read past the first page.
