Mom finally explained the strange message. James had called her the previous evening, telling her he wanted to visit but wasn’t sure how Brian and I would react. She had invited him for a private conversation first, hoping to explain the history before introducing him to us. She feared that seeing someone who looked exactly like Dad might be too overwhelming. But she hadn’t expected us to arrive early or discover the photograph. “I didn’t want to hide him forever,” she said. “I just wanted you to understand that your father had loved him once, even if they spent years apart.”
James quietly apologized for remaining absent from our lives. He admitted that he should have tried harder to reconnect, especially after learning that Dad had become ill. Brian asked whether James had any children or other family. James shook his head and explained that he had never married. He had spent much of his life traveling, working, and regretting the relationships he had lost. Then he reached into his jacket and handed us a second photograph. It showed him and Dad as children, standing beside their parents. On the back were the words, “Brothers forever, no matter what.”
