Every Sunday, my mother hosted dinner without exception. Since my father passed away three years earlier, those gatherings had become the most important family tradition we had left. My brother Brian and I always arrived hungry, knowing Mom would prepare roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and the same homemade dessert Dad used to love. We shared stories, laughed about old memories, and tried to keep our family close despite everything we had lost. But one Sunday morning, everything changed when my phone received a message from Mom: “Please don’t come today.” I immediately wondered whether something terrible had happened.

My mother had never canceled Sunday dinner, not even during terrible weather or difficult times. Brian and I decided to drive to her house together. When we arrived, her car was parked outside, and the porch light was still on. Nobody answered our knocks, so I used the spare key beneath the flowerpot. Inside, we noticed a large envelope on the dining table. Beside it was an old photograph of a young man standing beside my mother. I picked it up, and my hands began trembling.
