The letter explained that James had been the person our father trusted most when they were young. They shared everything, including their dreams of traveling and building successful lives. But their relationship changed when they both fell in love with the same woman. That woman was our mother. James had loved her first, and she had loved him too. However, James eventually left town without explaining his decision. Months later, our father and mother began their relationship. They married, raised us, and built the family we remembered. Dad never mentioned his brother again, and Mom respected his decision.
I looked at James, trying to understand how someone could disappear from his own family for so many years. He explained that he had made mistakes when he was young and believed leaving would prevent further heartbreak. When he eventually tried contacting his brother, Dad refused to speak with him. Brian became angry. “So you both just let us grow up without knowing we had an uncle?” James nodded sadly. He admitted that he had followed our lives from a distance, occasionally asking mutual acquaintances about us. Then Mom revealed something neither of us expected: James had contacted Dad shortly before his death.
