I made three calls from the laundry room floor. Then I printed what I needed and waited until everyone was seated.The first thing I put on the table was a hotel confirmation. Delphine and I were leaving that night, and we did not come back.

 

 

The second was a screenshot. My cousin had been filming the patio when it happened, for no reason except that she films everything. The video showed Sabrina walking out with the garment bag already open, holding the dress by the shoulders, waiting until people were looking. It was not a toss. My mother watched it twice and said nothing at all, which after thirty-one years was the most honest thing she had ever done in front of me.
