Wendell opened the leather folder before Preston could finish the sentence. The paragraph my son had insisted on adding five years earlier, the one that legally severed the land from the marriage and made it mine alone, mine to carry, mine to be blamed for, was the same paragraph that now made it mine alone to sell, to keep, and to leave to whomever I chose.
