Because his financial backing had been removed, the lender would immediately reassess the mortgage using only Marcus and Brianna’s income, credit history, and debt obligations. The second envelope came from the auto finance company. Their SUV loan, which Walter had quietly guaranteed years earlier, was now considered in technical default unless the couple refinanced the balance or paid it in full within the required period.

Brianna’s hands shook as she opened the third envelope. Inside was a carefully prepared letter from Diane Ashworth, acting as Walter’s attorney. It explained that the informal forty-thousand-dollar personal loan Walter had extended two years earlier—always dismissed within the family as “Dad helping us out”—had now been converted into a formal demand for repayment. They had thirty days to satisfy the balance before legal collection procedures would begin. Marcus stared at the pages without speaking, as though reading them again might somehow change the words. He rushed outside in his pajamas, dialing Walter for the fourth time that morning. The call went directly to voicemail.
