Juliette stared at the faded electrical panel, her pulse quickening as years of whispered doubts suddenly formed a single, terrifying possibility. Odette folded her arms with forced confidence, insisting the old house had always belonged to her family alone, while Mathieu remained unusually quiet. The silence unsettled Juliette more than any insult ever had. Every forgotten conversation with her late father, every strange warning he had given before his death, echoed through her mind. The panel looked ordinary, yet something about the loose screws and uneven paint suggested it had been opened long ago. She stepped closer, ignoring Mathieu’s nervous plea for patience. Odette’s smile slowly disappeared, replaced by visible fear, as though she knew exactly what might be hidden behind the metal cover. The hallway became unbearably still, every breath sounding louder than the last, while Juliette reached toward the panel with trembling determination.

Her fingers slipped behind the wiring and touched cold metal instead of empty space. Carefully, she pulled forward a small locked box wedged inside the wall, coated with years of dust but untouched by time. Mathieu suddenly rushed toward her, panic replacing every trace of composure. “Juliette, wait! Let me explain before you open that.” She met his frightened eyes without saying a word, realizing his fear confirmed everything she had suspected. Odette stepped backward until her shoulders touched the wall, unable to hide the horror spreading across her face. Juliette wrapped both hands around the mysterious box, took a slow breath, and finally forced the rusted latch upward. The lid creaked open, revealing a thick envelope tied with faded blue ribbon. As she unfolded the first yellowed page, her eyes widened at the signature printed across the bottom…
