Naomi stood frozen in Trevor’s kitchen as the silence grew heavier with every passing second. Trevor snatched the power-of-attorney document from the table, his hands trembling while reading every line. His face lost its color as realization replaced confusion. “Mom, this gives you financial authority over Naomi’s accounts. This isn’t an emergency form. This is control.” Diane’s confident smile faded, but she refused to look ashamed. She insisted she was only protecting the family’s future and claimed Naomi would eventually understand. Naomi said nothing. Instead, she watched the countdown timer on her phone continue toward zero, reminding herself that if the door stayed locked much longer, the emergency contact she had arranged would call the police.
“I need you to open that door now,” Naomi repeated calmly. Trevor looked between his mother and the document, his entire world beginning to collapse. After a long, painful pause, he slowly reached toward the lock, while Diane suddenly stepped forward with determination in her eyes…
