Over the following weeks, Dana became a regular visitor. We shared meals, exchanged childhood stories, and slowly developed a friendship. She showed me photographs of Emmett as a little boy, including one where he was holding a toy airplane. I had never seen him so young. For the first time, I understood how much of his childhood he had kept locked away.
Meanwhile, Emmett completed his additional medical examinations. The doctors explained that the abnormality required monitoring but wasn’t the immediate crisis he had feared. He finally agreed that I should be included in every future appointment. One evening, he thanked Dana for helping him reconnect with the family he thought he had lost forever.
