Six months later, we celebrated Dana’s birthday at our home. Emmett prepared dinner while I decorated the living room with family photographs. For the first time, his childhood pictures sat beside our wedding photographs. Dana looked around the room and smiled through her tears. She said she had spent years wondering whether she would ever have a brother she could call family.
Before dinner, Emmett stood and raised his glass. He apologized for keeping secrets and promised never to shut me out again. I squeezed his hand and looked at Dana. I had once feared another woman was coming between us. Instead, I had discovered a sister-in-law, a missing piece of my husband’s past, and a family we never knew we needed. That evening, I understood that sometimes the biggest surprises don’t destroy a marriage. Sometimes they give it a chance to become stronger.
