As I drove south, memories flooded my mind. Vanessa had always received the expensive gifts, beautiful vacations, and endless praise. I had paid my own university expenses, worked weekends, and struggled with student loans. Whenever I complained, my parents reminded me that Vanessa needed more help because she was supposedly less fortunate.
I tried calling my mother, hoping she might finally ask about my promotion. Instead, she wanted me to help cover Vanessa’s expenses. When I refused, my father became angry. He reminded me how much they had sacrificed for me. I almost laughed. Then he made a threat that left me speechless: he claimed my car wasn’t really mine.
