Dana explained that she and Emmett shared the same father but had different mothers. Their father had taken Emmett away when he was very young, and the siblings had grown up in separate households. For decades, Dana had searched for him without success. Recently, a distant relative had finally helped her locate him. Emmett admitted he had been overwhelmed when she first contacted him.
I asked why she was listed as his emergency contact instead of me. Emmett lowered his head. He explained that he had recently undergone medical tests and feared the results might reveal something serious. Dana had been helping him arrange appointments, but he hadn’t found the courage to tell me.
