Inside was the itemized balance, nine thousand six hundred and eighty dollars, and beneath it the original deposit receipt with my name printed across the top. Clipped to both was a card from the Oakhaven stationery, in my handwriting: Since I didn’t pay for this, I’m sure the real host will be glad to. Nathaniel read none of it aloud. He did not need to. Mom passed the folder to Sabine without a word, and Sabine held it the way you hold something that has just become heavier than it looks.
It was Dad who stood. He took out his own card, paid the full amount, and then did something no one expected. He walked out of the Emberly room, through the lobby, and found me in the parking lot beside my car, my hands shaking in the cold. He did not defend anybody. He said he had watched me carry every holiday, every birthday, every bill for twenty years and had told himself it was my choice. Then he said he was sorry he had let it be so easy.
