The coat was hanging in a garment bag when I brought it home. Its fabric was faded, one sleeve had been repaired, and several buttons were missing. I remembered seeing Richard wear it during cold winters when I was younger. It wasn’t particularly attractive, but throwing it away felt disrespectful. I placed it over a chair in my bedroom and left it untouched.
Two days passed before curiosity finally overcame me. I picked up the coat, examined its worn lining, and searched through the pockets. Most were empty, except for a few old receipts. Then my fingers touched something hidden inside an interior pocket. I carefully pulled out a sealed envelope bearing my name.
My heart began racing as I recognized Richard’s handwriting. Inside was a letter, folded neatly beside a small brass key. The opening sentence made me sit down immediately. Richard explained that he had deliberately left me something everyone would consider worthless because he wanted his final gift to remain unnoticed until I discovered it myself. I stared at the words, suddenly realizing that the old coat might contain a message far more important than anyone had imagined.
