Thirty Four Years Of Coming Home To Her Voice And One Letter She Wrote Without Ever Telling Me 2

Bennett read it twice. He did not defend himself, which was new. He said her name once and then he put his head down on my kitchen table and I let him stay there. We did not discuss the trust again that morning, or for a long time afterward.

He came back the following Saturday without calling first. He cut the grass, badly, and then sat on the back step and asked me how the grief group was. I told him about a man called Aurelio who talks too much and makes excellent bread. He laughed. It was the first real conversation we had managed since his mother got sick.

He has come nearly every second Saturday since. Two years of that now. He has never once mentioned the house, and I have never changed the trust back, and neither of those facts seems to matter to either of us anymore. Marisol and I are cordial. Nora is ten and helps me with the roses and has her grandmother’s terrible handwriting.

He asked me last spring, out of nowhere, whether I still had the boat.

I spent a year believing the worst thing was a message sent at half past ten at night. The worst thing was my wife protecting me by carrying it alone. A man is not a line in anybody’s budget, and once I stopped waiting to be chosen, my son finally worked out how to arrive on his own.
