Jessica spun toward the deputy and shouted, “Tell her what Mom and Dad did last month! They sold the family house, and we have nowhere else to go!” The kitchen became completely silent. Dad’s arms dropped slowly to his sides. Mom stared at the floor, and the phone she had been hiding the night before buzzed again in her hand. I looked at everyone, expecting someone to deny Jessica’s accusation. Nobody did. Finally, Mom whispered, “We were going to tell you this week.”
She turned the screen toward me. My stomach tightened when I read the message. It came from a moving company and confirmed that a truck carrying their furniture would arrive at my address Saturday morning. I looked at my parents in disbelief. They had sold their home without telling me and apparently planned to move their belongings into my villa. Jessica insisted that because I had plenty of space, I had a responsibility to take everyone in. I told her my property wasn’t a family shelter.
Dad finally admitted they had sold the house to pay off debts and had already spent much of the money. They had assumed I would let them stay temporarily until they figured everything out. What they hadn’t told me was that Jessica had also quit her apartment lease, expecting to move into the villa with her children. My cousins had apparently heard the same story and believed they could use the place whenever they wanted. The entire visit had been planned before anyone knocked on my door.
The deputy explained that they couldn’t simply occupy my property because they were relatives. I gave my family until the following morning to leave, and I made it clear that the moving truck would not be allowed through the gate. Jessica screamed that I was selfish and heartless, but I refused to change my mind. By Saturday morning, everyone had packed their bags. The moving company arrived, saw the locked gate, and turned around. As my relatives drove away, Mom called from the car and said she was sorry. I believed she meant it, but I also knew our relationship would never be the same again. My beach villa remained mine—and for the first time, so did my peace.
