The first thing I noticed was the white powder. It was scattered across the floor beneath my son’s bed, surrounding several small fragments I could not identify. For a few seconds, I simply stood there staring. The pieces looked strange enough that my mind immediately began inventing explanations. I wondered whether something had broken, whether he had been hiding something from me, or whether the unfamiliar material could somehow be dangerous. I picked up one fragment carefully and turned it between my fingers. It was lightweight, pale, and covered with a faint pattern. The more I looked at it, the less sense it made. My son had never mentioned a project, and the room was usually messy enough that I could not immediately tell what belonged there. I considered calling him and demanding an explanation, but something stopped me. Before accusing him of anything, I decided I needed to understand what I was actually looking at.
I moved closer to the bed and noticed that the fragments were not scattered randomly. Several appeared to have broken edges that seemed to fit together. There was also a strange texture on the surface, almost like a natural pattern rather than something manufactured. I reached for another piece and compared it with the first. They looked remarkably similar. My fear began giving way to curiosity, and I carefully pulled the blanket aside to see what else might be hidden underneath the bed. What I found there completely changed the mystery.
