Your Dog May Notice Things About People But It Cannot Judge Their Character

I used to believe my dog could tell whether someone was a good person. Whenever a stranger visited, I watched his reaction carefully. If he relaxed, wagged his tail, and approached confidently, I assumed the person was trustworthy. If he backed away, barked, or stared suspiciously, I became cautious. It was easy to imagine that dogs possessed some mysterious ability to see through people. After all, they noticed things humans often ignored. They watched how people moved, listened to their voices, and seemed to remember who treated them gently and who made them uncomfortable. Over time, I started treating my dog’s reactions almost like character references. Then one afternoon, a friend came over whom my dog had never met. The moment she entered the house, he stiffened, lowered his head, and retreated behind the sofa. My friend stopped in the doorway, confused. I immediately wondered what my dog knew that I didn’t.

 

 

Instead of forcing him to greet her, I watched carefully. His body remained tense, but he wasn’t lunging or trying to attack. My friend spoke softly and stayed still. After several minutes, my dog slowly came forward, sniffed the floor near her shoes, and then backed away again. That small reaction made me question something I had always assumed about dogs: were they really judging people, or were they simply reacting to what they experienced?
