For years, I thought vaginal health was mostly about keeping everything perfectly clean. Whenever something seemed different, I worried that I had done something wrong. A change in discharge, a little more moisture, or a different odor could send me searching for answers and buying products that promised freshness. I had never stopped to consider that my body might simply be changing naturally. Hormones, menstruation, sexual activity, medications, pregnancy, and eventually menopause can all affect intimate health. The more I learned, the more I realized that many changes were completely ordinary. The vagina has its own natural environment and does not need to be scrubbed, perfumed, or cleansed internally. In fact, douching and fragranced products can sometimes cause irritation or disturb that balance. Still, knowing that did not completely erase my anxiety.
One winter afternoon, I noticed a change that seemed different from my usual pattern. I stood in the bathroom, wondering whether I should ignore it, buy another “feminine hygiene” product, or call my doctor. I reached for my phone, ready to search for the quickest solution, when I stopped. For once, I decided to ask a more important question first: Was this actually normal for me, or was my body trying to tell me something?
