I had spent most of my life being the disappointment in my family. My father, Gerald Bennett, came from a powerful military family and expected his children to follow the path he had chosen. My brother Marcus embraced the family business, while I chose medicine and eventually became an Army doctor. My father considered my career a waste of the Bennett name. Years passed, and the distance became permanent. When my grandfather, General Vincent Bennett, died, I returned home for the funeral. My father barely acknowledged me. Marcus and his wife, Diane, treated me like an unwanted guest. During the reception, I overheard my father complaining about how much I had embarrassed the family.
